Photo creditIn the 1980s, as the Reagan administration's response to AIDS was widely condemned as inadequate, Parton lost friends to the epidemic. Her production company Sandollar backed Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, the documentary about the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. The film won an Academy Award and a Peabody — at a time when most of her country-crossover peers said nothing.
