Sandollar funded Common Threads — an Oscar-winning film about the Quilt, when Nashville stayed quiet

In the 1980s, as the Reagan administration's response to AIDS was widely condemned as inadequate, Parton lost friends to the epidemic. Her production company Sandollar backed Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, the documentary about the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. The film won an Academy Award and a Peabody — at a time when most of her country-crossover peers said nothing.
