In a Billboard interview during the summer of 2020, Dolly did not hedge. She said she understood why people needed to make themselves known, felt, and seen — and added the line that cut through: "Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter? No!" It was not a one-off. She had already renamed her Dixie Stampede dinner show after learning "Dixie" carried painful Confederate associations for many Black Americans, and she had long invested Whitney Houston royalties in a predominantly Black Nashville neighborhood.
