Whitney Houston Royalties → Nashville

The song Whitney made global — royalties Dolly redirected toward a new generation
Photo creditWhen Whitney Houston's 1992 cover spent 14 weeks at #1 and earned Parton an estimated $10 million in royalties in the 1990s alone, Dolly did something deliberate with the money. On Watch What Happens Live, she explained that she bought a strip mall and office complex in what was then a historically Black area of Nashville — off the beaten path from Music Row's 16th Avenue. "It was mostly just Black families and people that lived around there," she said. "I thought, 'This is the perfect place for me to be, considering it was Whitney.'" She called it "the house that Whitney built."
